Research Protocols
Practice
Practice is where Body as Map becomes repeatable. These protocols are not exercises for producing movement, but structures for observing how movement, memory, objects, attention and space organise the body.
Foundations
These protocols began as tasks within Mapping Myself. They are being reorganised here as repeatable research structures for observing how the body relates to materials, memory and space.
Protocol 001Unvisitable MapMapping Myself, 2021QuestionCan a map emerge before knowing what it represents?TaskChoose materials of any sort. Let them form a map before deciding what the map is of. Allow the map to emerge through making rather than planning.Protocol 002On / Off the MapMapping Myself, 2021QuestionWhere do I exist in relation to my own map?TaskPlace yourself in relation to the map. Move on the map, off the map, around it and beside it. Observe how position changes attention.Protocol 003Leave a MessageMapping Myself, 2021QuestionCan memory be distributed into objects?TaskLeave a message to each object or fragment. Gather them again. Tell one story from all the pieces.Protocol 004Nine FragmentsMapping Myself, 2021QuestionHow does location change meaning?TaskUse nine pieces made from one material. Give each piece its own location. Move one fragment and observe how the whole arrangement changes.Protocol 005Carry / Drop / FindMapping Myself, 2021QuestionWhat do I carry, what do I drop, and what do I find?TaskMove with one object or fragment. Carry it, drop it, leave it, return to it, and find it again. Observe how the body reorganises around what remains.Protocol 006Nine WordsMapping Myself, 2021QuestionCan a fragment contain an entire story?TaskTell a different story to each of nine fragments. Each fragment can only receive nine words. Gather the fragments and reconstruct one whole story.
These protocols began as tasks within Mapping Myself and are being reorganised as part of the continuing Body as Map research practice.
